You would agree with me that this concept (GRAPHIC DESIGN) has been multifaceted maybe because of its vastness and usage in our daily living.
It's everywhere, you just need to be aware of it.
The concept is composed of different fields and specializations. In this newsletter you would get to know the most common types of graphic design and there uses:
Corporate design – This has to do with the visual identity of a business, company of corporate body. Any visual elements that makes up a brand's identity, example is a brand’s logo, it can be associated with corporate design.
This type of graphic design is used in the brand marketing space to communicate brand information and values through images, shapes, illustrations and color.
An example is Coca-cola & Indomie noodles, what comes to your mind or what do you fill when you see their logo or come across there products?
Marketing and advertising design – This is one of the most widely known types of graphic design. When most people think of graphic design, they’re most likely thinking of marketing and advertising design. Social media graphics, magazine ads, Flyers, Posters, billboards, brochures, Album art.
They are more specific in the area of driving sales by making the audience to take action with the use of various elements of design.
Publication design – This can also be referred as print medium. Take a look at the constant digitalization of our generation, this has evolved into digital publishing.
Publication designers works closely with editors and publishers to ensure layouts, typography, and illustrations are tastefully combined producing the best possible end result.
Examples of publication graphic designs include books, newspapers, newsletters, magazines, and eBooks.
Environmental design – In my opinion this type of design is mostly overlooked. Environmental graphic design are visual elements in environments that connect people any scene or aspect of there environment.
The purpose of environmental design is to improve people’s experiences in the environment; it's meant to makes the experience more memorable or informs the viewer.
Examples are Architecture, road signs, signage, event spaces, and wall murals are all examples of environmental design.
Packaging design – When you buy a new product, it has some form of packaging or visual element such as a label, sticker, or wrapping that makes the product ready for distribution or sale; these elements are created by packaging designers.
Designers in this field are aware of current trends within the marketplace to ensure successful product marketing.
Motion design – As it's name implies, it's a subset of graphic design and it’s exactly what it sounds like: graphics that are in motion. This can include animation, video games, GIFs, website features, etc.
This is a new area in graphic design as technological advancements have allowed designers to bring there designs to life by making it move
Web design – this isn’t necessarily a type of graphic design, graphic design is one element of web design, so it’s worth mentioning here. Why? Because web designers must consider and combine a variety of the design elements – such as layout, images, and typography – to create a user-friendly, pleasant front-end web design.
Web design also encompasses UX and UI design, which I’ll dive into next.
UI and UX design can be said to be the Graphical aspect of Web design or development.
The digital world we live in today is filled with interactive screens and devices which brought about UI design and UX design.
UI Design - UI Design is known as User interface design, pertains to the interactive elements of a design. This type of design requires a good understanding of the users’ needs because it focuses on anticipating what users will need to do on the device and ensuring that the interface has the elements that make those actions possible.
These elements include things like dropdown lists, toggles, breadcrumbs, notifications, progress bars, etc. Basically, UI design is expanding the graphic design definition; designs that have any interactivity are UI, even if they incorporate static images.
UX design - UX is known as user experience design, it's about enhancing a guessed user experience. This type of design focuses on the structure and logic of the design elements that users interact with.
A UX designers work to improve a product’s usability, accessibility, and users’ pleasant interaction with the product, with a goal of maximizing customer satisfaction. This can be done by usability analyses of post-product launch.
